As far as enduring mysteries go, this isn’t the question of who killed the Princes in the Tower (Richard III’s nephews).

But it does seem funny that a scam artist pretending to be various publishing industry employees first emerged in spring 2017, hoping to snatch manuscripts before their release, and hasn’t yet been exposed.

The thief has targeted manuscripts from such writers as David Lagercrantz, Margaret Atwood, and Sally Rooney and has inspired such fear in the publishing world that writer Reeves Wiedeman sometimes couldn’t even get interviews with them — they feared he was the thief in disguise.

Read Wiedeman’s saga of the book thief, whose motives are almost as unclear as their identity, at Vulture.
