Happy birthday, again, to the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy.
(Thanks to Russia’s switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian in 1918, Tolstoy’s birthday is listed both as August 28 and September 9, 1828.)
Should you wish to celebrate the occasion, you can certainly prepare a special meal.
Tolstoy’s brother-in-law compiled his sister’s recipes, designed to accommodate the writer’s midlife crisis diet, as a joke, and the collection was translated into English a few years back.
Not everything made the cut; Open Culture, however, has one such omission — Tolstoy's mac 'n' cheese recipe — available for your interpretation.
Tolstoy is popularly known and praised for War and Peace and Anna Karenina, though his much shorter The Death of Ivan Ilyich is also considered one of the best novellas.
