Novelist Elif Shafak popped onto more readers’ radar a few years ago when her book 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

This fall, we’re hoping (for her sake) that having her latest novel be chosen for Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine book club does the same.

The Island Of Missing Trees, which came out a week ago today, begins with star-crossed lovers who meet in a Cypriot taverna, in which a fig tree grows.

Though war tears the lovers apart, the tree serves as a continuing link between them.
