Your turn, Israel.

After the country’s publishers decided to pull Sally Rooney’s first two novels from their shelves — in response to her refusal to sell translation rights to Beautiful World, Where Are You (her latest work) over the treatment of Palestinians — other authors and publishers are backing the Irish novelist.

The Guardian reports that a letter organized by Artists for Palestine UK includes support for Rooney’s decision, with seventy signatories including Kamila Shamsie, Monica Ali, and China Miéville.

“Palestinian artists have asked their international colleagues to end complicity in Israel’s violations of their human rights, and this for many of us is a clear ethical obligation,” they write in the letter.

Shamsie received, then lost, the Nelly Sachs Prize because of her support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement against Israel in 2019 — a move that Rooney publicly decried then.
