Remember how, a few years ago, an archive of T.S. Eliot’s letters stored at Princeton University were finally unsealed?
That took place in January 2020, so if you’ve forgotten, that’s completely understandable.
And that’s why it took literary scholar Megan Quigley so long to access them — COVID, in her words, slammed the doors of the archives shut again just a few months after they opened.
But this past fall, Quigley was finally able to read through the collection, and what struck her most was the picture of Eliot’s friendship with fellow writer Virginia Woolf.
Quigley shares her observations and speculations about the Eliot-Woolf friendship in an essay for the LA Review of Books.
