Literary media has called our attention to two interesting re-releases from decades past.
In the fiction department, we now have the first four books in Joseph Hansen's Dave Brandstetter series: Fadeout, Death Claims, Troublemaker, and The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of.
NPR's John Powers writes that, as an avowed crime-fiction junkie, that he's embarrassed it took him so long to find these works.
They're pioneering in that Dave Brandstetter, an LA insurance investigator, is both a tough guy detective and a gay man.
But, Powers says, they're also just plain good reads, too.
From the world of nonfiction, we have a new translation of Tété-Michel Kpomassie's memoir, Michel the Giant: An African in Greenland.
Kpomassie became fascinated with Greenland as a teenager in Togo, a country that's decidedly different from the far north.
And he eventually makes it to the country, a journey he relates in Michel the Giant (thus titled because he towers over the locals, at 5 feet 11 inches).
The Observer's John Self describes it, in his review, as both "an ebullient snapshot of a vanished age" and a travel book — if not for the faint of stomach.
