PEN America has added a special emergency session to its annual World Voices Festival.

The event from May 11-14 will now also feature an Emergency World Voices Congress of Writers, which occurs only in times of need — such as on the eve of World War II.

The New York Times reports that this emergency summit, inspired by Russia's attacks on Ukraine, will include more than a hundred writers, including Salman Rushdie, Gary Shteyngart, Ayad Akhtar, and Jennifer Egan.

Ukrainian novelist Andrey Kurkov, who is the president of PEN Ukraine, will also give a speech on threats to democracy and free expression.
