Bestselling and Newbery Medal-winning author Patricia MacLachlan has died at the age of eighty-four.

MacLachlan was best known for Sarah, Plain and Tall, which the New York Times reports was based on an event in her family's history.

She wrote several follow-ups to that Newbery winner as well as dozens of other picture and chapter books, with three more yet to come, according to her publisher.

You can read more about MacLachlan's writing career in the NY Times obituary.
