You don't have to consider yourself (or even be) a big fan of musicals in order to be familiar with Oscar Hammerstein II.

Now, you can become even better acquainted with the lyricist/librettist's work, beyond such musicals as South Pacific, Oklahoma!, The King And I, and The Sound of Music.

The Letters of Oscar Hammerstein II came out this spring, and its thousand-plus pages contain hundreds of letters ... culled from the 25,000 letters in the Library of Congress.

NPR's Bob Mondello reports that editor Mark Eden Horowitz's selection shows Hammerstein "the businessman, the mentor, the activist, and occasionally, the corrector."

He highlights some of these moments in his review of The Letters of Oscar Hammerstein II.
