Before you cringe at the news of a reality TV show for writers, at least listen to host Kwame Alexander's pitch.

(Yes, the New York Times bestselling author, not someone who just so happens to have the same name!)

America’s Next Great Author is, yes, a televised competition in which authors pitch their book ideas to a panel of judges.

But it's at least aiming to include "writers who aren’t normally given a seat at the table in mainstream publishing" from a variety of backgrounds and places around the US.

Jason Reynolds, an award-winning author and current national ambassador for young people's literature, is one of the judges; and Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, co-founders of The Book Doctors, will serve as mentors to contestants.

You can read more about America’s Next Great Author, including how to audition, on its website.
