Author Salman Rushdie was stabbed in the neck while on stage to deliver a lecture today.

The Associated Press reports that a man confronted Rushdie at western New York's Chautauqua Institution and delivered a mix of blows — punches and/or stabs — ten to fifteen times.

The assailant was arrested, and Rushdie was flown to a hospital, according to state police.

Rushdie is known for Midnight's ChildrenQuichotte, and The Satanic Verses, the latter of which was viewed as blasphemous by some Muslims.

It was also the impetus for Iran's late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to issue a formal edict seeking Rushdie's death.
