Happy birthday to F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of the commonly read The Great Gatsby and the perhaps less frequently read Tender Is the Night.

The latter novel was published in 1934, after a series of fits and starts and revisions.

Some fifteen years later, after the author's death, a shelved script based on the novel made its way to another writer who found himself stalled by success (and excessive drinking): Malcolm Lowry.

Michael Melgaard writes about Lowry's attempt (and failure) to revive the movie script for Tender Is the Night over at Literary Hub.
