Happy release week to author Namwali Serpell, whose novel The Furrows: An Elegy came out on Tuesday.

The book describes how the disappearance and presumed death of a seven-year-old boy tears his family apart and irreversibly changes all members.

Serpell explains why she was drawn to some of the novel's themes (and why she chose the subtitle that she did) in an interview with NPR's Juana Summers.

And you can read an excerpt from The Furrows, with the opening lines that Summers found so compelling, at Literary Hub.
