Somehow, we doubt this news distressed its main subjects, but … writer Margaret Atwood is among the 100 Canadians recently banned from Russia.

Moscow’s move comes in response to Canada’s latest round of sanctions against prominent Russians and military aid to Ukraine.

Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale, signed an open letter back in February that condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Or, as the Russian Foreign Ministry describes it, she and the other banned Canadians have been "directly involved in the formation of an aggressive anti-Russian course."

Atwood seems unfazed by Russia’s move, tweeting dryly that perhaps it was caused by a particular hat she wore (at what appears to be a pro-Ukraine rally).

For those curious: comedian and actor Jim Carrey was among the ninety-nine others on the new banned list.

Newsweek describes the members as politicians, media figures, businesspeople, and activists.
