Forgiveness and healing are common themes that people at least seek, if they don't necessarily attain, in a new year.

Perhaps you're among those folks but aren't quite sure how to get started.

In that case, here's a bookish (of sorts) route you could consider taking: Zora Neale Hurston’s study of hoodoo.

Writer Tracey Rose Peyton was working on a novel, some years after her father's death, when her research for it led her to Hurston’s book Hoodoo in America.

That and the further reading it inspired actually led her to some practices that helped her cope with her father's death and the complicated emotions it inspired.

Read about Peyton's experience with Hurston's hoodoo research at Literary Hub.
