Publishers had their plans in place, months in advance — they wanted to be ready to release the January 6 committee's report as soon as it went public.

In that, they succeeded, but NPR wondered whether the results were what they hoped for or expected.

So they asked NPD Books Group; its data showed that first-week sales for the January 6 report books were weaker than those containing the Mueller report and 9/11 report.

But, as NPD analyst Kristen McLean noted, those sales are almost pure profit — a foreword author might receive an advance, but the report authors aren't.

And on a less mercenary level, Guy Oldfield, the senior director of production for Macmillan Audio, said he and his team found value in simply being able to deliver a noteworthy document as quickly as they did.
