To paraphrase a popular musical ... Librarians, they get the job done!
That's especially true of Florida's Highlands County Library System, which has an award-winning mobile library.
NPR reports that the American Library Association gave Highlands County's mobile library its public service award, for ensuring that residents of five counties have access to reading materials and internet.
DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Highlands and Okeechobee counties are all quite rural, said mobile library team leader Vikki Brown, meaning that residents face travel time and cost barriers to getting to brick-and-mortar buildings — especially if they work in agriculture jobs.
You can listen to Brown tell Weekend Edition's Scott Simon about the mobile library's accomplishments on NPR's website, which also has a transcript of the conversation.
