Today is writer Norman Mailer's birthday, making the release of an excerpt from a book — as well as the book itself — a few weeks ago especially timely.

The blurb of Tough Guy: The Life of Norman Mailer by Richard Bradford describes it as a "merciless biography" of a "controversial figure," with cameos from a number of other famous figures.

One such figure: President John F. Kennedy.
