If you thought the Oscars only recently became controversial, think again.

Michael Schulman's new book, Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat and Tears, which came out last month, covers the scandals that many of us have forgotten — or never heard of.

In an interview with Fresh Air's Terry Gross, Schulman reminds listeners that these awards are more akin to political campaigns than one might like to think.

That is, there are "a million other factors" beyond artistic merit that go into nominations and victories.

You can read an excerpt of Schulman's discussion of Oscar Wars on NPR's website or listen to the entire audio on NPR's website.
