  • The shortlists for the fifth annual Selfies Book Awards are out (BookBrunch).

  • And so are the shortlists for the British Book Awards; the Alliance of Independent Authors was excited to note that one contender, LJ Ross, is an "indie pioneer" (Publishing Perspectives).

  • Now to winners — the ten emerging writers to receive a Whiting Award have been announced, and NPR also has excerpts of some of their work (NPR).

  • The Booker Prize statuette now has a name, though it's the one that received the second-highest vote total (The Booker Prizes).

  • On a more somber note ... Julie Anne Peters, author of the groundbreaking YA novel Luna (among other books), has died (The New York Times).

  • So has author DM Thomas, whose novel The White Hotel drew equal measures of acclaim and criticism (The Guardian).
