Literary award announcements were flying in yesterday — here are the many writers who were celebrated, including the one who will be taking home two pieces of prestige (and their associated purses).
National Book Foundation 5 Under 35
This award honors an author who is, obviously, younger than thirty-five and who has released their first and only work of fiction in the past five years.
The judges, all of whom either received a National Book Award nod (nomination or prize) or were chosen as a 5 Under 35 recipient, selected these writers to receive a $1,000 prize:
-
Mateo Askaripour, author of Black Buck
-
Chelsea T. Hicks, author of A Calm & Normal Heart
-
Morgan Talty, author of Night of the Living Rez
-
Jenny Xie, author of Holding Pattern
-
Ada Zhang, author of The Sorrows of Others
PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction
Yiyun Li’s The Book of Goose has received America’s largest peer-juried prize for fiction.
Over five hundred submissions this year vied for the $15,000 cash prize.
The four other finalists receive $5,000 each:
-
Jonathan Escoffery, author of If I Survive You
-
Kathryn Harlan, author of Fruiting Bodies
-
Dionne Irving, author of The Islands
-
Laura Warrell, author of Sweet, Soft, Plenty Rhythm
Windham Campbell Prize
Eight writers who had no idea they were under consideration for this honor have now each received an unrestricted grant of $165,000.
