The children of beloved authors likely expect to inherit the rights to their parents' works.
But to actually inherit their characters and worlds? Maybe not so much.
Anne Hillerman, daughter of Tony, has obviously picked up the mantle in the years since her father's death, with multiple bestsellers set in her father's fictional world.
It wasn't overnight, though; she told NYT Book Review editor and fellow author Elisabeth Egan that it was difficult to imagine a world without her father.
With time, however, she came to see that bringing Bernadette Manuelito, Jim Chee, and Joe Leaphorn back was a way to connect with her dad, despite his death.
