Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" first appeared in the June 26, 1948, issue of The New Yorker.

It's been terrifying readers ever since, with Fussy fans no exception to that rule.

In the spirit of the day, The New York Times invited well-known authors and other creatives to share their memories of reading "The Lottery" for the first time and reflect on why it stuck with them.

Respondents include Stephen King, David Sedaris, Carmen Maria Machado, and Tananarive Due.
