An Argentinian writer's proposal to rename the Spanish language has been rejected.

The Associated Press reports that Martín Caparrós, author of a book about Spanish speakers in the Americas (among other works), wants to call the language “Ñamericano," to reflect the geographical location of most speakers of the language.

Caparrós made the suggestion publicly in March; on Monday, the director of the Spanish Royal Academy said it was a nonstarter.

The Spanish Royal Academy is in charge of compiling the authoritative Spanish-language dictionary and of deciding on correct usage and linguistic changes.
