Congratulations to Alice Winn, who has won the 2023 Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize for her novel In Memoriam!

The love story between two World War I soldiers was inspired by student newspaper clippings, which made the author feel "absolutely grief-stricken" when she stumbled upon them, reports the Guardian.

That emotion was evidently translated very well onto the page.

Winn receives £5,000 (about $6,280) in the second year of the prize's history.

The only qualifications besides it being a novelist's debut are that it be written in English and published by a UK publisher.

NPR interviewed Winn earlier this year, if you'd like to hear more from her.
