Living in Des Moines, Iowa, means that you hear a fair amount about the covered bridges of Madison County — yes, the ones that feature prominently in Robert James Waller’s novel and the movie it inspired.

But if, like me, you're not originally from Iowa and were in elementary school when the novel came out means that you might not fully understand what a big thing it was back in 1993, when the novel was published.

Thankfully, we have Rebecca Joines Schinsky to help us understand.

She reflected back on the viral sensation of The Bridges of Madison County, thirty years later, over at BookRiot.
