Ten years ago, romance novelists pitching their work to trad-pub kept their fan-fiction beginnings under wraps.
The tables have turned, says Vulture, pointing to how a literary agent contacted then-unknown author Ali Hazelwood upon finding her fan fic online.
So what happened to prompt this turnaround?
One reason is that big publishers realize that a popular fan-fic author already has a fan base and strong online presence — so the marketing is off to a solid start, without any resources from the publisher.
