Linguistics class is in session on the reader newswire today.

The New Yorker profiled Emily Wilson, who has translated both The Odyssey and The Iliad into modern English.

Wilson's Odyssey came out six years ago, marking the first time that a woman brought the epic poem into English; her Iliad comes out next week.

Word nerds may also enjoy an excerpt of The United States of English: The American Language from Colonial Times to the Twenty-First Century by Rosemarie Ostler.

As this passage notes, by the time the American Revolution occurred, their version of English had been diverging from their homeland's for some two hundred years.
