The good news: a graphic novelist is back after a long pause.

Daniel Clowes, celebrated for the Lloyd Llewellyn series and Ghost World (which inspired a cult-classic movie), hadn't released anything in seven years.

That ended last week when Monica, a collection of stories, came out.

As he put it in an interview with NPR, the "beats" of the title character's life "line up ... sort of algebraically exact" with his own experiences.

You can listen to or read highlights from Clowes's conversation with Juana Summers on NPR's website.

The bad news: comic book artist and writer Keith Giffen died Monday at age seventy.

Some of Giffen's best-known work includes Rocket Raccoon, star of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie series, and DC's Blue Beetle, aka Jaime Reyes, who also got his own movie this year.

You can read more about Giffen's life and work in his Guardian obituary.
