Scholastic will stop separating diverse titles at book fairs

Scholastic has changed its approach to diverse titles in its book fair offerings.

NPR reports that after weeks of public backlash over the requirement that schools opt in to receive books on certain topics, Scholastic will discontinue its "Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice" section starting in January.

The company had initially defended the separation as a way to help educators in the thirty-plus states that either have enacted or are considering enacting legislation that restricts what kids can read in schools.

But yesterday, authors and illustrators received an apology letter that said, in part: "Even if the decision was made with good intention, we understand now that it was a mistake to segregate diverse books in an elective case."
