We may have lost author John le Carré, but it turns out we haven't lost one of his beloved characters.

The Guardian reports that George Smiley will return next fall in a currently untitled novel being written by le Carré's son.

Nicholas Cornwell, who writes as Nick Harkaway, will bring Smiley back in a novel that's set between The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Cornwell has seen critical success in his own right, and he was involved in bringing his father's final completed novel, Silverview, to publication after le Carré's death.

Also making a comeback: author Michael Cunningham.

Day, his first novel in almost a decade, comes out tomorrow; it covers three actual days — April 5 in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

You can hear what Cunningham has to say about Day in his interview with NPR's Scott Simon.
