Congratulations to the 2023 winners of the National Book Award!
Each of these authors received $10,000 (and some bling) at last night's ceremony.
Fiction: Blackouts by Justin Torres
Nonfiction: The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History by Ned Blackhawk
Poetry: from unincorporated territory [åmot] by Craig Santos Perez
Translated literature: The Words That Remain, written by Stênio Gardel and translated from Portuguese by Bruna Dantas Lobato
Young people's literature: A First Time for Everything by Dan Santat
Host LeVar Burton and Oprah Winfrey, who also spoke during the ceremony, used the stage as a platform for denouncing book bans and challenges.
And, of course, there was talk of Gaza, Israel, and war ... twenty of the twenty-five finalists took to the stage as one of their own read a statement calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East.
You can read coverage of the event from the Guardian, The New York Times, and NPR.
