It took six hours of discussion, but the 2023 Booker Prize judges finally chose a winner.

Prophet Song by Paul Lynch was announced as the winner of the £50,000 (about $63,200) prize last night.

Esi Edugyan, the judging chair, described the book about an Ireland descending into right-wing tyranny as a “soul-shattering and true” novel that “captures the social and political anxieties of our current moment," reports the Guardian.

Lynch was favored by several bookies to win the 2023 Booker.

It wasn't the only literary award announced in Britain over the weekend: Friday night, the winners of the 2023 Polari Prize for LGBTQ+ literature were revealed.

Jon Ransom won the £1,000 (about $1,260) Polari first book prize for The Whale Tattoo, while Julia Armfield won the £2,000 (about $2,500) overall prize for Our Wives Under the Sea.
