The newswire is riding that fresh-new-year high right now, apparently, because we're able to share multiple uplifting or optimistic stories!

(Well, as long as you look past the reason that some of these victories had to be sought ... )

  • Late last week, a federal judge temporarily blocked two parts of Iowa's book-ban bill, which was set to take effect January 1: the ban on books that depict sex acts and the prohibition on teachers raising gender identity and sexual orientation issues with students through the sixth grade (The Associated Press).

  • Karen Smith, who was sworn in last month as Central Bucks County (Pennsylvania) School Board president, went viral for doing so on a stack of banned books; she explains why she selected these particular titles (School Library Journal).

  • Meet Mychal Threets, a young librarian in California whose TikTok and Instagram posts are spreading what he calls "library joy" (The New York Times).

  • Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has given out over 226 million books to children, to date, with an estimated investment of over $500 million from Parton herself (The Things).
