Books can be dangerous, yes — to those who write and publish them.

PEN America has formally condemned the Russian government for placing author Grigory Chkhartishvili on its wanted list.

The London-based writer, better known as Boris Akunin, is one of his country's most popular novelists, according to PEN.

But he's also an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine — hence why he's been accused of criminal activity by his native country's leaders.

Artist Ai Weiwei can empathize, as someone who also paid a price for criticizing leadership in his home country (in this case, China).

Literary Hub has an excerpt from Weiwei's graphic-novel memoir, Zodiac.
