It's highly fashionable among elder Millennials to reminisce fondly about the Pizza Hut reward program for readers, known as BOOK IT!.
So author Shannon Reed's recent declaration that BOOK IT! messed her up bad is a real attention-grabber.
It's because, Reed explains, she was already a fast reader and a pizza lover — two characteristics that, combined, sent her down a path of reading fast and retaining next to nothing.
There's a happy ending, though; she explains, in a passage of her book Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries, and Just One More Page Before Lights Out, how she re-learned to read for pleasure, not for a victory.
This excerpt of Why We Read is at Literary Hub.
