Check out the latest news on book bans and challenges around the US (and it's a weird one) ...
-
The good: The Freedom to Read Act has been introduced in Maryland's legislature; this bill would protect workers and books in schools and libraries, tie state funding to freedom of access, and prohibit bans because of "partisan or doctrinal disapproval" (Book Riot).
-
The bad: Nearby West Virginia is taking the opposite approach, with the House of Delegates voting to remove protection from criminal prosecution for schools, public libraries, and museums if minors encounter obscene material therein (The Parkersburg News and Sentinel).
-
The surprising: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who led successful efforts to make challenging or banning books easier, is calling on officials to change policies that resulted in dictionaries and classic literature being pulled from shelves (WUWF).
