Today's award roundup is for all ages; we'll start with the youngest first.

  • The winners of the 2024 Barnes & Noble Children's & Young Adult Book Awards have been announced: I Lived Inside a Whale by Xin Li won for picture book; The Misfits, written by Lisa Yee and illustrated by Dan Santat, won for young reader; and Powerless by Lauren Roberts won for young adult (Book Riot).

  • V. V. Ganeshananthan has won the second annual Carol Shields Prize for Fiction; her novel, Brotherless Night, follows a young woman whose dreams of being a doctor are upended by the Sri Lankan civil war (NPR).

  • Ian Penman has won the Ondaatje Prize, which honors a piece of literature that best evokes the spirit of a place, for Fassbinder: Thousands of Mirrors, which studies German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder (The Guardian).

  • Cristina Rivera Garza discusses how she found community, but not justice, through writing her Pulitzer Prize winning memoir; Liliana’s Invincible Summer discusses the murder of the author's sister (The Guardian).
