May, aka Short Story Month, might be over, but the standalone free reads keep coming.

Literary Hub and Electric Literature each have a short story from a collection for you to enjoy.

The former features "Double Shift" by Hilary Leichter, which originally appeared in the literary journal Conjunctions.

The latter features "The Board Will Decide If I’m Qualified to Live in the Basement" by Elif Batuman.

This story is from A Cage Went in Search of a Bird, a new anthology commemorating the one-hundred-year anniversary of Franz Kafka’s death.

Electric Lit, in turn, shares it today to mark the writer's birthday (and the anthology's June 4 release).
