News from the book world isn't always rainbows and butterflies.

So here are the posts from the past few days that are more likely to make you cringe than cheer.

  • Last year, rather than remove only LGBTQ+ pride displays as they were told, Blasco Public Library employees pulled down all displays in the children's section, to protest the singling out of one group; this year, county leadership struck a sweetheart deal with a tax-exempt private religious institution to let it rent library space at a steep discount (Book Riot).

  • As July is Disability Pride Month, Kelly Jensen wants to highlight how often books addressing disabilities are caught up in book bans and challenges (Book Riot).

  • Author Curtis Sittenfeld has decided to compete against ChatGPT to see whether artificial intelligence can write a better "beach read" than she can (The New York Times).
