Catch up quick with the bookish news of the past few days ... or take a deeper dive into each story. Your choice!

  • Netflix is developing Barbaric, a TV series adaptation of the Vault comic; it will star Sam Claflin and Patrick Stewart, with Claflin also serving as executive producer (Deadline).

  • You can also watch the movie adaptation of the YA sci-fi novel Uglies by Scott Westerfeld on Netflix this fall — after nearly twenty years in development (Book Riot).

  • PBS is featuring Dominican-American poet and novelist Julia Alvarez on American Masters this fall, too; Julia Alvarez: A Life Reimagined airs on September 17 (Variety).

  • Library budget problems have left New York City readers unable to borrow some of the hottest new books (The City).

  • Another head-scratcher: The Florida Department of Education released a list of recommended reading for students with the theme of American pride ... and included British novelist Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice on it (Florida Politics).

  • The novel Jaws by Peter Benchley celebrated fifty years in bookstores this past February, but since the book became the "it" beach read of the summer, it makes sense that we're reflecting on its legacy just now (The New York Times).
