Banned Books Week begins soon — this Sunday, to be exact — and this year's edition might be the most bittersweet and necessary call for attention yet.

PEN America reported last week that over 10,000 instances of book bans were recorded during the full 2023-2024 school year (July 2023-June 2024).

Stay tuned for a deep dive into these trends next week along with final figures in October.

New York’s Brooklyn Public Library, meanwhile, asked users of its digital library card for those ages thirteen to twenty-one to share why they've been making use of the tool.

Cataloging and analyzing that data has been quite the task, but you can see some of the findings in Kelly Jensen's weekly roundup of book bans and challenges at Book Riot.
