Here are the literary deaths that either occurred recently or popped into the news recently, all reported by The New York Times:

  • Marion Wiesel died Sunday at age ninety-four; she translated many books by her husband, Elie Wiesel, including the 2006 edition of his best-known work, Night, and a 2023 biography of Elie Wiesel credits Marion Wiesel's translation as causing 3 million of the 10 million sales of the book.

  • Millicent Dillon died January 27 at age ninety-nine; she won the O. Henry Award for short stories five different times, but is perhaps more widely known for her nonfiction work on literary couple Jane and Paul Bowles and for being the mother of writer Wendy Lesser.

  • Suzanne Massie died Sunday at age ninety-four; Massie was inspired to research Russian history and culture and learn the language by her son's hemophilia diagnosis, and her book Land of the Firebird: The Beauty of Old Russia caught the attention of Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev, in turn connecting her with US President Ronald Reagan.
