John Casey, who wrote essays, short stories, and novels including the National Book Award winner Spartina, died February 22 at age eighty-six.

Laura Sessions Stepp, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who also wrote the bestseller Unhooked: How Young Women Pursue Sex, Delay Love and Lose at Both, died February 24 at age seventy-three.

Pierre Joris, who translated the notoriously complex work of German-Romanian poet Paul Celan while also earning acclaim for his own poems, died February 27 at age seventy-eight.
