Here are the literary deaths that either occurred recently or popped into the news recently, all reported by The New York Times:

  • Geoff Nicholson, who wrote darkly comic novels including Bleeding London, died January 18 at age seventy-one.

  • Uri Shulevitz, who wrote and illustrated books for younger readers including How I Learned Geography and The Treasure, died February 15 at age eighty-nine.

  • Melody Beattie, author of the bestseller Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself, died February 27 at age seventy-six.

  • Joan Dye Gussow, a nutritionist whose book The Feeding Web: Issues in Nutritional Ecology influenced later advocates of eating locally, died March 7 at age ninety-six.
