Today we’re interviewing author Sandra Sookoo, who writes historical romance, Regency romantic suspense, and Regency mysteries.
Sookoo is a USA Today bestselling author who believes every person deserves acceptance and a happy ending.
She’s written for publication since 2008, creating scandal and mischief in the Regency era, serendipity and happenstance in the Victorian era, or historical romantic suspense complete with mystery and intrigue.
Give her the chance with one book and you’ll be hooked.
SADYE: How did you come to see yourself as a writer, and what inspired you to seek publication?
SANDRA: I started writing at the age of ten after I did a report in school on Walt Disney. I was impressed and inspired by what he’d overcome to meet his dreams.
My first book was fantasy and involved all the kids in my neighborhood. Then I was introduced to romance at my local library and spent summer days reading everything I could get my hands on.
But it wasn’t until I was in my thirties that I started trying to get my work published with publishers. The rest is history because at the end of September 2025, I will publish my 200th book!
SADYE: Tell us something about your writing process that’s unusual or that you haven’t revealed before.
SANDRA: I’m a big believer of doing a detailed outline for every book I write.
It’s much like writing a first draft, so by the time I’m ready to actually write the book, I’m very familiar with the plot and characters so I rarely get hung up or stalled.
It’s another reason why I’m able to write quickly. It cuts down on editor-demanded rewrites as well.
SADYE: Which of your characters would you most and least like to become romantically involved with?
SANDRA: Definitely Inspector Bright from my Mary and Bright series. He is the epitome of what a man should be as well as how a man should treat a woman.
SADYE: What has been the most surprising or rewarding part of your writing career?
SANDRA: When readers reach out to me, write to me and tell me how my books have helped them through hard times and helped them to escape, and how they enjoy how I showcase characters with flaws and mental challenges because it makes them feel seen.
SADYE: What advice, as relates to your writing career, would you give your younger self?
SANDRA: Don’t let the “noise” around you distract you from your goals.
You’ll do things differently than what’s popular, but that’s okay. It’s what will set your work apart from everyone else.
