Today we're interviewing author Robin O’Connor, who writes romance, science fiction, and paranormal novels.
Specifically, O’Connor writes about sexy alien heroes and the quirky women who keep them on their toes. She lives with her husband, their son, and a chaotic mix of books and computer parts that could double as a mad scientist’s lab.
SADYE: How did you come to see yourself as a writer, and what inspired you to seek publication?
ROBIN: When I was ten, my teacher was so impressed with a short story writing assignment that she wrote in the margins: "You should become a writer!"
I told her I wanted to be a paleontologist. I never stopped writing, and I never studied dinosaurs.
After my son was born, I had to reinvent my career, and the choice was easy!
SADYE: What period of history would you most like to travel back to and why?
ROBIN: While I never did become a paleontologist, I would absolutely love to travel back in time to see the dinosaurs with my own eyes.
I’d take my dad with me; he inspired my love for them!
SADYE: What message or theme would you like readers to take away from your work?
ROBIN: I always try to write romance where the couple is respectful of one another and portrays what is to me a true, healthy relationship.
My message is that we should always aspire to have, and always deserve, that type of love, and that means open communication, mutual respect, and yes, compromise!
SADYE: What advice, as relates to your writing career, would you give your younger self?
ROBIN: You are not terrible at finishing a story, you just need to outline what comes next when you get stuck!
SADYE: What experience in your past or general aspect of your life has most affected your writing?
ROBIN: Being chronically ill means managing my energy levels and planning my time very carefully.
It has a huge impact some weeks and not as much on others, so my productivity definitely comes in spikes.
I think it’s made me more aware of the diversity among people and inspired me to be inclusive in the characters I write.
