Tommy Orange has won the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel, for his book There There.
PEN America announced his win today, along with honoring two runners-up and two honorable mentions.
Among the judges’ praise for There There, the tale of twelve Native Americans all attending the Big Oakland Powwow:
“This novel is not only breathtaking, but also profoundly moving as Orange assembles a chorus of characters whose collective narrative disrupts and expands our literary landscape.”
Along with the accolades, Orange will receive $25,000, intended to allow “significant time and resources” to pursue another work of fiction.
Runners-up Akwaeke Emezi (Freshwater) and Ling Ma (Severance) and honorable mentions Meghan Kenny (The Driest Season) and Nico Walker (Cherry) will all receive a Residency Fellowship at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming.
