An acclaimed poet and professor is under investigation for quoting James Baldwin’s use of a racial slur.

Laurie Sheck says she asked a class of graduate students at the New School in New York City to discuss why the 2016 documentary about Baldwin — I Am Not Your Negro — altered the original quote by Baldwin, who initially uttered that sentence with the N-word in place of “negro.”

A white student raised concerns with the language at the time and evidently went on, months later, to file a complaint.

Sheck told the Guardian that the university is violating its own regulations by investigating the discrimination complaint, because such complaints are supposed to be filed within sixty days of the incident.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and PEN America are calling on the New School to drop the investigation.
