A racial-discrimination complaint against a professor who quoted James Baldwin’s use of a racial slur has been dismissed.

The Guardian made this update on Laurie Sheck’s case, which had drawn attention from the advocacy organizations Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and PEN America.

Sheck, an acclaimed poet who also teaches at the New School, had asked her graduate students to discuss why the documentary I Am Not Your Negro used the word "negro" in place of the N-word, which is what Baldwin had originally used.

A student filed a complaint, which Sheck objected to not only because she had quoted an author’s use of the word, but also because the complaint was filed more than sixty days after the incident.
